Red Sox re-sign LHP prospect Michael Sansone to minor league contract

In addition to Eduardo Rivera and Reidis Sena, the Red Sox have re-signed left-hander Michael Sansone to a minor league contract, according to Chris Hatfield of SoxProspects.com.

Like Rivera and Sena, Sansone was slated to reach free agency next month but is now in line to return to the Red Sox organization in 2026. The soon-to-be 26-year-old is not currently ranked among the system’s top pitching prospects.

A Connecticut native, Sansone went undrafted as a senior coming out of Fairfield in 2022 and signed his first professional contract with the Rays that summer. He spent part of the next two seasons in Tampa Bay’s farm system before being released in July 2023.

Last March, Sansone signed with the Yolo High Wheelers of the independent Pioneer League, only for his contract to be purchased by the Red Sox a few weeks later. The lefty then spent all of 2024 with Low-A Salem, compiling a 3.11 ERA (3.25 FIP) with 68 strikeouts to nine walks over 20 appearances (three starts) spanning 72 1/3 innings.

Sansone returned to Salem for the start of the 2025 season and put up a 2.75 ERA (2.81 FIP) with 22 strikeouts to one walk in 10 relief appearances (19 2/3 innings) before being promoted to High-A Greenville in late May. In 16 outings (seven starts) for the Drive, he posted a 3.84 ERA (4.18 FIP) with 50 strikeouts to 13 walks over 65 2/3 innings. He received another promotion to Double-A Portland on September 9 and made the most of his lone outing for the Sea Dogs five days later by striking out a pair in three scoreless, one-hit frames of relief.

Though Sansone was elevated yet again to Triple-A Worcester on September 16, he was subsequently placed on the development list to end his season. So, altogether, he forged a 3.46 ERA (3.80 FIP) with 74 strikeouts to 14 walks across 27 appearances (seven starts) totaling 88 1/3 innings between Salem, Greenville, and Portland in 2025. Opposing hitters batted .249 against him.

Among the 14 Red Sox minor leaguers who, regardless of level, threw at least 85 innings this year, Sansone notably ranked second in walks per nine innings (1.43) and walk rate (3.9 percent), fifth in swinging-strike rate (13.8 percent) and WHIP (1.11), and seventh in ERA (3.46), per FanGraphs.

Standing at 5-foot-9 and 195 pounds, Sansone throws from a three-quarters arm slot and incorporates some deception into his repeatable delivery. As noted in his SoxProspects.com scouting report, the compact southpaw features an 86-88 mph fastball while also mixing in a 75-78 mph changeup, an 81-83 mph slider, and a 74-76 mph curveball.

Assuming his name does not come up in either phase of December’s Rule 5 Draft or any other transaction this winter, Sansone is projected by SoxProspects.com to return to Portland as a member of the Sea Dogs’ bullpen to begin the 2026 campaign.

Red Sox promote relief prospect Michael Sansone to High-A Greenville

The Red Sox have promoted left-hander Michael Sansone from Low-A Salem to High-A Greenville, as was first reported by Hunter Noll of Beyond the Monster.

Sansone started the season in Salem’s bullpen after spending most of 2024 with Boston’s Carolina League affiliate. To open the 2025 campaign, the 25-year-old lefty posted a 2.75 ERA and 2.92 FIP with 22 strikeouts to just one walk in 10 relief appearances (19 2/3 innings) for the Red Sox. He converted two of his three save opportunities as opposing hitters batted .233 against him.

Among 85 Carolina League pitchers who entered play Tuesday having thrown at least 19 innings this year, Sansone ranked first in walks per nine innings (0.46) and walk rate (1.3 percent), fourth in WHIP (0.92) and xFIP (2.66), ninth in swinging-strike rate (16.1 percent), 13th in FIP, 16th in strikeout rate (29.3 percent), 19th in ERA, 26th in line-drive rate (19.2 percent), and 31st in strikeouts per nine innings (10.07), per FanGraphs.

Sansone began his professional career with the Rays organization after spending four years at Fairfield and going undrafted in July 2022. The Connecticut native made a handful of appearances in the Florida Complex League that summer and compiled a 3.49 ERA (3.10 FIP) in 15 relief outings (28 1/3 innings) for Tampa Bay’s Low-A affiliate the following season before being released in July 2023. He then signed with the Yolo High Wheelers of the independent Pioneer League last March, only to have his contract purchased by the Red Sox a few weeks later.

Sansone reported to Salem shortly thereafter and finished 2024 with a 3.11 ERA (3.25 FIP) in 20 appearances (three starts) spanning 72 1/3 innings. Altogether, the dimunitve southpaw owns a 3.14 ERA (3.16 FIP) with 127 strikeouts to just 15 walks over 120 1/3 career innings at the Low-A level dating back to April 2023, so one could say this is a well-earned promotion.

Standing at 5-foot-9 and 195 pounds, Sansone throws from a three-quarters arm slot and incorporates some deception into his delivery. Not known for his velocity, he primarily operates with a three-pitch mix that consists of an 88-90 mph fastball, an 83-84 mph slider and a 79-80 mph changeup, as noted in his SoxProspects.com scouting report.

Sansone, who turns 26 in November, is not currently ranked among Boston’s top 60 prospects by SoxProspects.com. In Greenville, he is slated to join a bullpen mix that, at present, includes fellow lefty Zach Fogell and righties Isaac Stebens, Matt McShane, Cooper Adams, Adam Smith, and Darvin Garcia.

Greenville’s series opener against Bowling Green on Tuesday was postponed due to inclement weather. It will be made up as part of a seven-inning doubleheader on Wednesday night.

Red Sox’ Michael Sansone makes strong mark in 2024 with Low-A Salem

After signing out of the independent Pioneer League in April, Michael Sansone put together an exceptional first season as a member of the Red Sox organization.

Sansone became the first player in the young history of the Yolo High Wheelers to have his contract sold to a major-league club. The 25-year-old left-hander came with prior experience in affiliated ball, as he spent parts of two seasons in the Rays organization after signing with Tampa Bay as an undrafted free agent coming out of Fairfield University (Conn.) in July 2022.

Shortly after signing with Boston, Sansone reported to Low-A Salem, where he would spend the remainder of the 2024 campaign. In 20 appearances (three starts) for the Red Sox, the lefty posted a 3.11 ERA and 3.25 FIP with 68 strikeouts to nine walks over 72 1/3 innings. Though he held right-handed hitters to a .193 batting average, left-handed hitters surprisingly batted .340 off him.

Among the 46 Carolina League pitchers who worked at least 70 innings this year, Sansone ranked second in walks per nine innings (1.12) and walk rate (3.1 percent), fourth in WHIP (1.01), ninth in FIP, 16th in ERA, 17th in xFIP (3.47), 19th in swinging-strike rate (13.6 percent), per FanGraphs.

Listed at 5-foot-9 and 195 pounds, Sansone primarily operates with a three-pitch mix that consists of a fastball, slider, and changeup. When speaking with The Athletic’s Melissa Lockard back in April, Red Sox assistant director of professional scouting Mark Heil noted that while Sansone doesn’t throw particularly hard, the southpaw “has a good slider and changeup and excellent make-up.”

Sansone, who just turned 25 earlier this month, is not currently ranked by publications such as SoxProspects.com as one of the top pitching prospects in Boston’s farm system. He is, however, projected to make the jump to High-A Greenville next season if he remains with the organization through the winter and into the spring.

Red Sox sign former Rays farmhand Michael Sansone out of Pioneer League

The Red Sox purchased the contract of left-hander Michael Sansone from the Yolo High Wheelers of the independent Pioneer League on Wednesday, per the club’s MLB.com transactions log.

Sansone, 24, originally signed with Yolo in early March but never pitched for the newly formed High Wheelers since the 2024 Pioneer League season does not start until next month. In fact, he becomes the first player in the team’s history to sign with a major-league organization.

Sansone has been assigned to Low-A Salem but has past experience in affiliated ball. After a four-year career (primarily as a starter) at Fairfield University, the Connecticut native went pro by signing with the Rays in July 2022. He debuted and made four scoreless relief appearances in the Florida Complex League before breaking camp with Tampa Bay’s Low-A affiliate last spring.

In 15 relief outings for the Charleston River Dogs, Sansone posted a 3.49 ERA and 3.10 FIP with 37 strikeouts to five walks over 28 1/3 innings in which he held opposing hitters to a .243 batting average against (that includes a .179 batting average for left-handed hitters). Despite those relatively strong numbers, the southpaw was released in late July.

Sansone attended a workout for unsigned free agents put together by the Red Sox over the winter. Boston’s scouting staff already knew of Sansone through their connections at Fairfield. Mark Heil, the club’s director of professional scouting, told The Athletic’s Melissa Lockard that “while Sansone doesn’t throw particularly hard,” he has “a good slider and changeup and excellent make-up.”

Like right-hander Danny Kirwin, who also officially signed with the Red Sox out of the Pioneer League on Wednesday, Sansone should provide Salem with additional bullpen depth in the early stages of the 2024 campaign. The 5-foot-9, 195-pound hurler joins fellow lefty Jojo Ingrassia in that regard.
